Thursday 25 July 2024: An awareness session on menstrual hygiene management and nutrition was conducted in the hall of THQ, Jand, District Attock. During the session, mothers who were lady health workers highlighted the need for strategies to improve conditions related to anemia, which they found alarming during their routine visits. According to them, if a lady health worker visited 25 houses daily, she would find women and girls with low hemoglobin levels in 15 of those houses. They mentioned a specific case where a woman died due to anemia. The participants appreciated PODA’s efforts to reduce early marriages and expressed their full support for the demand to raise the minimum age of marriage for girls to 18 years. They noted that in some communities, especially among nomads, women often lack identity cards, nikah namas, and B-forms, which contributes to the prevalence of child marriages. One participant mentioned a case of a young girl from the nomads’ colony who was married at the age of 15 and subsequently suffered from various health complications. PODA Woman Leader, Shazia Noureen collaborated with the project team to organize this activity in district Attock. The activity is part of PODA’s project “Reduce Early Marriages for Gender Equality” funded by the Norwegian Embassy, Islamabad.
